Usʔ: Persimmon 1
A 2 -piece pot in the form of a persimmon. Made of hand dug clay, the body of the pot is stone burnished and the lid is left un-burnished. Open-pit fired.
Description
Recently exhibited in the “In the Spirit” contemporary Native art exhibition.
Persimmons are an important part of Caddo foodways, often appearing in the old stories. Usʔ is a contemporary rendering of a traditional Caddo pot. Its literal shaping and lidded design appeal to the modern aesthetic, while its traditional method of construction and subject matter root it firmly in the Caddoan tradition. The clay is hand-dug, hand processed, coil-built, and pit-fired. The fruit is burnished with a rock and fired inside another pot to protect it from exposure to smoke, and the leaves are left unburnished and exposed.
